Minutes from the March 17, 2002 meeting were approved with minor corrections (that have been made on the archived edition).

Treasurer's Report

For the period March 17, 2002 - April 28, 2002:


Total Expenses = $2,428.38
Total Deposits = $1,222.00
Ending Balance (checking account) = $4,460.43

Other funds:
Certificate of Deposit = $6,527.24

Anticipated expenditures:
Bloomquist Scholarship = $500.00

Total Cash on Hand = $10,987.67

Director's Report - John Whitwell & Wes Broadnax

Housing is needed for high school musicians who will be participating in the High School Honor Band. The band will be meeting the first Saturday in January (January 4, 2003). It will require only a single evening of housing. This event has proven to be an excellent mechanism for recruiting outstanding players for the MSU Bands. The High School Honor Band will consist of 80 pieces and be selected from 150-160 who apply. Please get in touch with John Whitwell for additional information.

The themes for the 2002 Fall Reunion will be an honoring of Dave Catron (on his retirement) and recognizing the first inclusion of women in the Spartan Marching Band.

President's Report - Bill Monroe

Bill reported that the Spring Reunion was the best ever. A total of $260 was collected for the Catron Fund from those attending the Reunion. Next year's Spring reunion will be held on April 13, 2003. Location will be the University Auditorium (not the Wharton Center). Bill had been contacted by Merry Malfroid of the Grand Rapids MSU Alumni Club (at Joe Levine's suggestion) regarding the possibility of a group of Alumni Band members playing for their annual golf outing. It was suggested that Merry should get in touch with either Gary Marx or John Madden.

Executive Secretary's Report - Beryl Falcone

Lynn Brown will be investigating the idea of including special merchant offers to be included with membership in the Alumni Band Association (similar to what the MSU Alumni Association does).

New Business

Kim Hopkins discussed her taking over the Editor responsibilities for Encore. Publishing dates for the newsletter will be February 1, June 1 and November 1. Kim will be preparing a budget so that it will be possible to better understand the costs of the newsletter and be able to reduce costs where appropriate.

The text deadline for the next issue will be May 15, 2002.


It was moved (Doug Goodrich) that Kim prepare two issues of the newsletter each year that will be mailed to everyone on our mailing list (not just members of the Association). Motion passed.



Joe Levine and Beryl Falcone shared the idea of adding 3 new members to the Board. They (in addition to Gordon Spink) will be preparing a motion for the Board to consider for changing the Bylaws for the enlargement of the Board.



A discussion was held regarding the idea of an increase in the dues for the Association. It was suggested that until such time as the Board had a clear idea of exactly what such additional funds might be used for it would be difficult to establish a viable reason for raising the dues - and to know exactly how large an increase would be appropriate. John Whitwell encouraged the Board to consider a significant project in the months ahead as a way to make a major contribution to the MSU band program. A committee was appointed (John Whitwell, Doug Goodrich, Lynn Brown) to consider the budgetary needs of the Association and especially to recommend a possible project(s) and how much additional revenue would be needed to fund such a project.

It was suggested that it would be helpful if the Tresurer's Report also showed planned future encumberances/commitments. This would provide a clearer picture of the funds that might be available for additional projects.

Gail Catron shared with the Board the plans for a Dinner/Roast to honor Dave's retirement. The event will be held on September 14th (following the Fall Reunion). An insert will be included in the next Newsletter to inform the membership of this event.

The next board meeting is scheduled for July 28, 2002 at 2pm at Buddies in Okemos.
