Old/New Business
Post Office Box: It appears that the Alumni Band Association continues to pay for a Post Office Box that was used for CD orders a few years ago. Evidently this box is no longer being used, though we continue to pay a charge of $44 for it. Bill Monroe will speak to Roger Weyersberg about discontinuing the box.
Instrument Fund: There continues to be a balance in the treasury of $1,126.40 that is the remainder from the Instrument Fund (purchase of trombones for the SMB a number of years ago). It had been decided at a prior Board meeting that the money would be turned over to the SMB. John Madden will be encouraged to write a letter requesting these funds so that a check can be written and the money taken off the books of the Association.
Publication of Encore: The cost of publishing Encore was discussed. It was reaffirmed that the newsletter continues to get good reactions and that it is a good investment for the Association.
Dave Catron Update: Dale Bartlett shared an update on Dave Catron. He appears to be making good progress and hopefully will soon leave the hospital and continue convalescing at home. The Board discussed ways in which they might be able to show support for Dave from the Alumni Band Association. Rather than commiting a specific amount at this time for the purchase of something for Dave, it was decided that Dale would continue to follow Dave's progress and come back to the Board at a future meeting with suggestions/recommendation for how the Association might best be able to assist. The Board encouraged Dale in this task and showed unanimous support for providing some form of assistance for Dave.
Names/addresses of Board Members: Joe was asked to prepare an updated listing of the names and addresses of all Board members, ad hoc committee members, and others who regularly attend Board meetings. This will be distributed at the next Board meeting.
Dates for the Next Issue of Encore: Dates were established for the production/mailing of the next issue of Encore -
February 1, 2001 - Final submission of articles for the next issue
February 15, 2001 - Publishing/mailing of next issue
Meeting with Dean Wendy Wilkins: A recent meeting with Dean Wendy Wilkins regarding a new music building was discussed. Pre-fund raising is now being initiated. It is expected that the State of Michigan will pay 70% of cost. The current proposal is to have the building constructed on the parking lot area directly to the North of the Auditorium/Fairchild Theater. Construction funds for the new building would also include funds needed for renovation of the Auditorium to be used in conjunction with the School of Music. No definite decision has been made regarding the location of a facility that could be used by the Marching Band. The possibility of Dem Hall continues to be considered - though it is a distance away from the proposed site for the new music building.
Fall Alumni Band Reunion: It appears that the most likely game in the fall for the Alumni Band Reunion will be the 2nd game of the season - September 15, 2001 - MSU vs Missouri.
It was decided that the MSU Athletic Ticket Office will be contacted and they will handle all extra ticket requests directly. This will take the Association out of the "middle" of ordering/issuing the tickets and should make things work more smoothly.
MSU Alumni Association: The relationship with the MSU Alumni Association was again discussed. Though the Board has been in favor of developing a formal relationship with the MSU Alumni Association it appears that the MSU Alumni Association is meeting opposition from members of their own Board and also college representatives regarding how such a relationship should/can be created. At issue is the fear that members who currently specify a specific college as their "constituent" group would, instead, specify the MSU Alumni Band as their constituent group. This would potentially pull members and dollars away from various college consituent groups in favor of joining with the MSU Alumni Band, and since the Alumni Band cuts across many different colleges it is feared that the effect would be far reaching.
As it was originally proposed, the MSU Alumni Band would receive $11 of each membership that came through the MSU Alumni Association. Though this is less than the current dues amount paid by our Association members, it was felt that we could sustain the small loss in favor of supporting the MSU Alumni Association. It appears that this possible linkage with the MSU Alumni Association is far from over. Stay tuned for further developments in the months ahead!
In the meantime it was suggested that we devote space in the Encore to supporting dual membership of our members in both the Alumni Band Association and the MSU Alumni Association. Past cooperation with the MSU Alumni Association has been good and this should be acknowledged.
Ad Hoc Committee Chairs: Bob Rice has agreed to be Historian and R J Bullock has agreed to be the Archivist.
Approval of Funds for Digitizing Old 16mm Band Films: It was moved, seconded and approved to provide $2000 in support of the project to digitize old 16mm band films as described in the Bullock/Honhart letter dated Ocotber 1, 2000. It is understood that the $2000 will be more than sufficient to fulfill the project. RJ Bullock will oversee the project.
New Assistant Director of Bands: Bill Monroe will be inviting Wesley Broadnax, Assistant Director of Bands, to participate in future Alumni Band Association Board meetings.
Participation of Alumni Band in December Basketball Games: The Alumni Band made two appearances during December at both a Women's Basketball game - December 20, 2000 vs CMU (40 members participated) and a Men's Basketball Game - December 30, 2000 vs Wright State (72 members participated). There was an excellent response to the participation of the Alumni Band at these events and it is hoped that similar participation will be arranged in future years.
Overseas Trip: Currently there are 74 members who have signed up for the overseas trip. Bassoons are being sought for filling out the instrumentation of the group. (If no bassoons are available a small accordion ensemble will be hired to take their place since the sound is so similar.)
Associate Membership: A form to be used by anyone desiring Associate Membership in the Association is needed. Gary Baron will be asked to create one.
Meeting adjourned.
