Minutes
January 8, 2006

REMINDER: The next Board meeting will be March 19, 2006.

Meeting was called to order at 2:03pm by President Gerry Spry.

Present: Bill Sachs, Gordon Spink, Terry Person, Gerry Spry, Beryl Falcone, Henry Nelson, Jack Nelson, John Whitwell, Dale Bartlett, Kim Hopkins, Bob Rice, Gary Baron, John Madden, Lynn Brown

Secretary's Report - Lynn Brown

Minutes from the October 2, 2005 meeting were approved as presented

Treasurer’s Report - John Kostoff

John Kostoff was not present. The report was provided after the meeting. Therefore, the report, shown below, will be approved at the next board meeting.

For the period October 2, 2005 – January 8, 2006:

Total Expenses = $5,592.11
Total Deposits = $406.00
Ending Balance (checking account) = $11,249.14
(Commission Portion) $1,618.00

(Regular Portion) $9,631.14

Other funds:
Certificate of Deposit (As of 07/28/05) = $5,115.03

Total Cash on Hand = $16,364.17

Anticipated expenditures:

Bloomquist Scholarship (Yearly) = $500.00
Commission Project = $2,500.00

Band Director’s Report

John Whitwell announced at Dr. Kevin Sedatole will be the new Director of Bands as of August 15, 2006.

Old Business

MSU Alumni Band Trip – Dale Bartlett

Plans for the 2007 trip are progressing. The initial deposit is due January 17, 2006. The band needs trumpet players.

Chicago Reception Report – John Madden

There was a good turnout for the reception. It will be an annual event.

Alumni Holiday Band Report – Jack Nelson

107 people signed up for at least one of the seven games. It will be an annual event.

Spring Concert Report

The Spring Concert will be held at the University Auditorium on April 23, 2006. Registration at 8am; rehearsal from 9 – 12; and, the performance is at 3pm. The Symphonic Band will be playing before the intermission.

Mass Mailings – Gary Baron

Gary will ask for an update of undeliverable e-mail addresses in the Spring Encore.

Status of our Relationship with MSUAA – Gordon Spink

Keith Williams, Executive Director of the MSU Alumni Association, has noi yet responded to the memos sent to him by Gordon Spink asking about our relationship. Dr. Simon, President of MSU, has established a Best Practices Committee to evaluate the MSUAA. Gordon Spink is a member of the committee.

New Business

Discussion of our Mission Statement – Terry Person

The Purpose/Mission Statement of the MSU Alumni Band Association is:

1. To facilitate contacts/communication within MSU Band Alumni;

2. To provide ongoing support of the MSU Band program;

3. To promote opportunities for collegial/social activities among band alumni;

4. To promote opportunities for active musical participation for band alumni; and

5. To participate in and support specific targeted fund raising initiatives as periodically identified by the Board.

Specific examples will be provided the Board at the next meeting. And, a vote will be taken at that time regarding the Mission Statement.

Discussion of Scholarships

More information is needed to make a decision regarding increasing the scholarships.

Encore – Bill Sachs/Kim Hopkins

January 16 – items for publication are due

January 27 – proof needs to be ready

January 30 – newsletter is due at the printer

Fall Alumni Band Day – John Madden

The Fall 2006 Alumni Band Day will be held on September 2.

Nomination Committee for Next Year’s Officers

Terry will pick at committee to determine the list of nominees.

The next board meeting is scheduled for March 19 8, 2006 at 2:00 pm at Buddies in Okemos.
