Director's Report - John Madden
John Whittwell is back from sabbatical . The theme of the Fall Band Reunion will be the Retirement of Dave Catron: A Tribute to Dave Catron. All Catron-era persons are particularly asked to return for this Fall’s reunion and Catron-era persons will be recognized. All Board members felt this was a great idea and very timely. Also, this is the 30th anniversary of the first women in the band and that could be a part of the program. Maybe recognize those women who were in the first year of women. Madden thought the Spring Concert went very well. Roger Weyersberg has brought in the plaques of the past band presidents. They have been hung with the others. We are all current except for Jim Cook (Spink working on getting his picture) and Bob Rice.
Vice-President's Report - Jim McCaffery
President's Report - Bill Monroe
Executive Secretary's Report - Beryl Falcone
Past President’s Report - Gordon Spink
Gordon Spink gave an up date on the last meeting he had with the MSU Alumni Association (Keith Williams, Executive Director and Sandy Soifer, Assistant Director). We will be designated as a Special Interest Group and not as a Constituent Group as originally discussed. After discussion, it was agreed that we will not have the MSUAA collect any dues or us. When a person joins the MSUAA and indicates Alumni Bandin the Special Interest Category, the MSUAA will notify us and we will send them a letter telling them about us and asking for them to join us as a member for the $15. If they do, they will receive all mailings. If they only join the MSUAA (and choose to not join the MSU Alumni band Association) they will receive the one mailing per year. Gary Baron has been in contact with the MSUAA and a motion was made by Jim McCaffrey, seconded by Doug Goodrich and approved that Gary can send the MSUAA our membership/mailing list so we and they can see which of our members are also members of the MSUAA. A discussion was held and it was felt that it would be to our advantage to join with them. It would be a win-win. A motion was made by Jim McCaffrey, seconded by Doug Goodrich and approved that the MSU Alumni Band Association immediately become a Special Interest Group of the MSU Alumni Association. Spink will inform the MSUAA.
After discussion with John Madden following the last MSU Alumni Band Board Meeting, Gordon has arranged a breakfast meeting (June 15, 8 AM) with Chris Ritrievi (Development Director for Athletics), Terry Braverman (Ralph Young Fund - Dev. Offrice), Mark Hollis (Athletic Office), Jeff Dunlap (Development Officer from the College of Arts and Letters), Dean Wendy Wilkins (College of Arts and Letters) , John Madden and Gordon Spink to discuss the Spartan Band Fund. Before the MSU Alumni Band start any fund raising efforts for the Marching Band, Gordon wanted to be sure he understood the operating structure of the Spartan Band Fan Club. Would this be the place for any money raised by the MSU Alumni Band? Gordon will report on this at the next Board Meeting.
Old Business
Henry Nelson requested the Board approve $1,000 to help with unforeseen expenses for the Alumni European Trip. There was concern regarding the lateness of the request, exactly what it would be used for (printed programs, etc.) and why these costs were not included in the cost to each participant. There was a lengthy discussion. Two years ago we gave the European Alumni Trip $500. It was moved by Bill Monroe, seconded by Gordon Spink to give the Alumni Band European Tour Group $1,000. Motion defeated. It was moved by Bill Monroe, seconded by Gordon Spink to give the Alumni Band European Tour Group $750. Motion was approved. The Tour Group will also be asked to give a detailed report of their use of the funds upno their return.
Golf Outing (the day before the Fall Reunion). Following past practice, a motion was made by Gordon Spink, seconded by Jim McCaffrey to provide $100 for the purchase of prizes for the Golf Outing. Motion passed.
Members should be reminded that September 1, 2001 is the deadline for registration for the Fall Reunion.
After discussion, it was moved by Jim McCaffrey and seconded by Doug Goodrich for Bill Monroe to invite Bill Wiedrich (Dave Catron's Assistant for 6 years from 1982-1988 and Associate Director of Bands during 1989) to be our guest for the Fall Reunion for which we will pay his travel expenses and two nights at the Kellogg Center. Motion passed.
John Madden will make the Kellogg Center reservations. Bill Monroe will write and invite Ken Bloomquist and Dave Catron to participate in the Fall Reunion. Bill Monroe will also contact Old Country Caterers, the MSU Police for parking passes for the day and also inquire if MSU Police could have a student be present for security in the IM West rehearsal room during our outside rehearsal and the game. Bill Monroe will contact the sound persons we used last year. Spouses will be asked to help with registration, etc. for that morning. Joe Levine will be asked to again invite the following persons to speak to the group: President McPherson, Athletic Director Underwood, Alumni Association Director Keith Williams, School of Music Chairperson Jim Forger, Dean Wendy Wilkins, and Coach Bobby Williams.
Meeting adjourned.- 4:20 pm
