2.  Secretary’s Report – Betty Elliott

Minutes from the January 6th meeting were corrected to show the next meeting as today, March 16th, not March 1st as erroneously recorded.  Minutes were then approved as corrected.  Betty will ask Joe Levine to correct accordingly on the web site.

3.  Treasurer’s Report – Greg Pell (attached at end of these minutes)

Greg Pell reports that there were no deposits and minimum expenditures.  Treasurer’s  report was approved.

4.  Vice President’s Report – Bill Sachs (not present; Terry reporting)

a.       The post office has approved the mailing of the Encore as 3rd class up to 3 ounces (which is 6-8 pages).

b.      Arrangements have been made for advance deposits.

c.       Beryl still has concerns about the mailbox.  Terry will request that Bill talk with Beryl.

5.  President’s Report – Terry Person

A thank you was received from the Big Ten Flags for the Alumni group’s donation to their fundraising for new flags and equipment.

6.      Band Directors’ Reports

a.       John Madden reports that:

·        The Demonstration Hall ballroom renovation work will be done by next fall.  $500,000 has been put into acoustically treating the room, along with other renovations.  For now we are still sharing the area with others, but eventually it will be ours only, freeing up space at the music building.

·        The date for the fall reunion has been set for September 13th, and was included in John’s last letter in the Encore.  This will be MSU against Florida Atlantic.

b.  Kevin Sedatole reports that:

·        Interviews have been completed for the Assistant Director of Bands with 3 candidates as finalists, with an announcement hopefully next week.

·        A thank you was given for the support of the Chicago trip; lots of positive feed back is still being received regarding the concert.

·        Kevin is hoping for a Symphony Band  invite to the Michigan Music Conference next year January in Grand Rapids.

7.  Member Relations – Beryl Falcone

a.       Beryl passed around some “President’s Wall” photos and reports the wall is complete with two exceptions.

b.      Beryl thanked Jack for all his help in archiving material in folders by years.  All materials will be taken to MSU archives soon.

c.       Fritz Stancell wants to do a book on Leonard Falcone and would like to include anecdotes.  Please ask friends and submit to Beryl.  A small article about this will be put in the Encore.

d.      It was moved, seconded and supported to include a picture of Beryl on the “Wall of Presidents” as the founder of the Alumni Group.

8.  Old Business

a.       Spring Concert

·        33 registrations have been received so far with scattered instrumentation.  All instruments are welcome and bringing friends is encouraged.

·        Bloomquist and Whitwell will be guest conducting and the Directors will communicate directly with them.

·        Both scholarships will be awarded.  The Bloomquist scholarship will be awarded to David Turrill (trumpet DMA) and the Whitwell scholarship will be awarded to Galen Karriker (Conducting DMA)

·        The Alumni Band will perform first.

b.      CommunicationsGary reports no changes.

c.       Next Encore Deadline – unknown at this time; usually in June.

d.      By-Law’s Committee Update – Committee has not yet met.

e.       Board/Directors Liaison Update – Joe provided a written report of meeting with John Madden

·        Encouraged purchase of 4 to 6 8” tables that would belong to Alumni and SMB for fall reunions.  Gerry will price and have info by next meeting.

·        Suggest an area for socialization (i.e. tall cocktail tables) prior to rehearsals.  Gerry and Joe will price and present proposal at next meeting.

·        Learned that new silver saxophones will cost $50,000 to $60,000.  Mr. Madden will bring a proposal to next meeting as a project for us to work along side the Development Office.

·        Placed an article on the website about the passing of Bill Moffitt.

·        Provided website stats relative to traffic.

f.        Continuing Discussion – Increasing membership and participation

·        Need to stay in touch with new grads; continue to mail them the Encore.  Need also to ensure that they are getting all e-mail communications. John will talk to graduates and attempt to obtain e-mails from everyone.

·        John can provide a list of SMB graduates for the past 10 years, but other music groups will need to fill out a form of some sort.

·        Suggestion for a marketing campaign between the two websites (SMB and Alumni); use of Facebook (John can bring someone to next meeting to explain this).

9.  New Business

a.  Fall Reunion – September 13th.

·        Greg reports that he was unable to obtain usage of the LaSalle Room for the Friday night dinner.  It was suggested we consider a “kegger” or “tailgate” the night before fall reunion as opposed to a formal dinner most generally attended by older alums, as a way to bring in younger alums.

·        Restructuring registration – discussion on this will be held in a smaller sub-committee group.

·        Alumni Merchandise – Monies haven’t yet been received from Kirk Gartside for last year’s sales.  Terry called and invited him to participate in the April gathering.

b.      Slate of Officers for 2008

President – Bill Sachs

Vice President – will try to recruit Jim Barry; if not available will do an electronic

      mailing for self-nominations.

Secretary – Betty Elliott

Treasurer – Greg Pell

At Large – Jack Nelson and Lynn Kelsey

Vice President Nominees – will ask Jim Barry for some suggestions

c.       Other – Dale Bartlett reports that the next Alumni tour will be Italy in 2010, which will be 25 years since the first tour.  There will be a lunch on April 13th between the rehearsal and concert for past travelers and interested future travelers.

The next meeting of the board will be Sunday, May 18, 2008.

The meeting adjourned at 3:25
