Treasurer's Report
Director's Report - John Madden & John Whitwell
Tremendously busy time of year with the Spartan Marching Band doing pre-game and half-time shows for yesterday's (September 8, 2001) football game. Band did an excellent job as reported by a number of Board members. Possible dates for next year's Fall Reunion are September 7, 2002 (MSU v Rice) or September 14, 2002 (MSU v California).
Auditions have been completed for the Wind Symphony. Rehearsals have begun and it is looking like it will be an excellent year.
Vice-President's Report - Jim McCaffery
President's Report - Bill Monroe
* Arrangements with the caterers have been made.
* DPS Parking passes (only 3 this year) were distributed.
* Postcards with final schedule are at the mailers and should get in the mail at the beginning of the week. Setting of the schedule should be done earlier in future years to avoid this extra mailing and also the anxiety it creates in some members not being able to finalize their travel arrangements for the Fall Reunion.
* Beryl will have the key to the arena in IM West and will make sure building is secured during the game. She will reopen the building after the game to allow those who left items in IM West to retrieve them.
* The problem of latecomers to the Fall Reunion was discussed. It was agreed that this is a problem for John Madden in creating the formations for the half time show. John suggested, however, that it is a problem that he can deal with and he would encourage the Alumni Band Board to not enact any policy that might be seen as punitive since the whole idea of the event is to welcome former members in an atmosphere of hospitality. The Board agreed with John's sentiments.
* Twenty seven have signed up so far for the Golf Outing. This is the largest group so far. Dale and Lynn have arranged prizes for those participating. It is certain to be the usual great success!
* Board members and other "helpers" are encouraged to arrive at the Fall Reunion between 6:00-6:30 am. This will allow the setting up of tables, arranging of food, etc. Everyone promises to be quiet and refrain from engaging each other in either loud or substantive conversation at this early hour!
Executive Secretary's Report - Beryl Falcone
Past President’s Report - Gordon Spink
Gordon Spink reported that the MSU Alumni Band Association is now listed as an "Interest Group" with the MSU Alumni Association. The MSU Alumni Association will be notifying us of individuals who check this option. It was suggested that we provide a "free" one year membership in the MSU Alumni Band Association for those names received in this manner who are not already on our roster.
Gordon reported on a suggestion that he, Beryl and Joe had discussed to extend participation in Board Meetings to more members of the Association. In particular he described an ad hoc position that could be created and used thatn would not require changing the Bylaws. Bill Monroe asked Gordon to write up the idea for presentation/discussion at the next Board Meeting.
Old Business
Lynn Brown reported that she was prepared to begin contacting local merchants to identify those willing to provide discounts to members of the Association. Such discounts would be advertised to members and probably printed on the membership cards.
New Business
John Whitwell shared information about the commissioning of some short pieces for band in honor of Dave Catron. If all goes well the pieces will be premiered at the Spring 2002 Reunion. Bill Monroe volunteered to be the liaison between the Board and John Whitwell as relates to the commissioning and the participation of the Alumni Band Association.
It was moved and seconded that up to $2500 be allocated to support the commissions. These would be "matching funds" to match donations solicited from members. Motion passed.
Joe Levine shared a paper copy of the suggested new web page that would be used for viewing/purchasing MSU Alumni Band items. He asked that those attending the meeting contact him with any suggestions on how to improve the page. The page is currently viewable at: http://www.msu.edu/~alumband/items.htm It is planned that the page will be available on the website in time for the Fall Reunion.
John Madden reported a visit by the Dave Leppla, Director of the Purdue Bands. He is visiting a number of college bands as part of his sabbatical. To share his experiences he has set up a website that he is continually updating. Images from his visit to MSU can be seen at:
