Minutes
September 21, 2003
REMINDER: The next Board meeting will be January 4, 2004.
Meeting was called to order at 2:10 by Vice President Gerry Spry.
Present: Gerry Spry, Lynn Brown, Beryl Falcone, John Kostoff, Dale Bartlett, Gordon Spink, Wes Broadnax, Jack Nelson, Paul McNeilly
Secretary's Report - Lynn Brown
Minutes from the July 20, 2003 meeting were approved.
Treasurer’s Report - John Kostoff
For the period July 20, 2003 – September 21, 2003:
Total Expenses = $9,596.31
Total Deposits = $16,037.34
Ending Balance (checking account) = $8,145.82
Other funds:
Certificate of Deposit = $5,000.00
Total Cash on Hand = $13,145.82
Anticipated expenditures:
Bloomquist Scholarship (Yearly) =
$500.00
R J Bullock Digitizing Project = $2,000.00
Treasurer's report was approved as presented.
For the period September 2002 – September 2003:
Total Expenses = $19,216.53
Total Revenues = $16,204.34

Annual Treasurer’s Report: September 2002 – September 2003, provided to all Alumni Band Day attendees on September 6, 2003, was approved as presented.
Vice President’s Report – Gerry Spry
Gordon Spink met with development officers of the College of Arts & Letters regarding the Marching Band Building. The College of Arts & Letters will provide a written proposal. Opportunities will exist to sponsor offices, rooms and Chairs in the new music building. Where the Marching Band building will be (as part of the stadium, Demonstration Hall, etc) is still in the idea stage.
UGLI – Paul McNeilly
A check for $1,100 was presented to the board for merchandise sold on Alumni Band Day (September 6, 2003). Paul indicated that we still have enough available stock.
President’s Report – Jim McCaffrey
On Alumni Band Day 2003:
Number of paid members: 464
Number that attended reunion: 340
Number that marched: 330
Number of “No Shows”: 29
Number of “Walk Ins”: 27
Number of box lunches ordered: 160

The First Annual Alumni Band Dinner was a success.
Executive Secretary’s Report – Beryl Falcone
The Spring 2004 Alumni Band Day will be held on April 18 at the Wharton.
The Next Encore will be mailed on February 1, 2004. The deadline for submissions is January 15, 2004.
Alumni Band Golf Outing Update – Dale Bartlett
40 participants signed up and 37 played. Of the $100 allocated, $43.91 of the board’s money was used.
Dale expressed his appreciation for Lynn Brown’s assistance with the golf outing.
Alumni Band European Trip Update – Dale Bartlett
The tour is almost full.

Old Business
Gordon Spink ascertained that the MSU Alumni Band is a Special Interest Group within the MSU Alumni Association.
Jack Nelson has compiled a five-member Homecoming Parade Band committee that will be organizing participation in the Fall 2004 Homecoming Parade. Members of the committee are: Carrie Lyon, Bob Rice, Cheryl Ames, Joe Levine and Jack Nelson.

Director’s Report – Wes Broadnax
The Spartan Spectacular will be October 4, 2003.
The MSU Wind Symphony will be performing on September 25, 2003 with soloist Richard Sherman (flute). Fred Fennell will be a guest conductor and clinician.
The next board meeting is scheduled for January 4, 2004 at 2:00 pm at Buddies in Okemos.
