Teaching At A Distance: From Concept to Practice

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: The upcoming April/May 2007 session will be the final workshop offered. After a very successful 4 years of offering the Online Workshop, new priorities/projects are demanding more and more attention and it is now time to move on to them. Thanks to everyone who have participated in the workshops and have made them such a tremendous success. Good luck in all of your distance education endeavors!! Joe Levine

Is the content and process of the workshop what I am looking for?

Okay, it seems that you have a basic understanding of distance education. Great!!

Now, let's look at the process that will be used for the Online Workshop and some of the specifc topic areas that will be focused on. The following 8 items (#6 - #13) identify some of the key concepts that will be the focus of the Online Workshop.

Pre-Assessment - Part 2

Item 6 - I am looking forward to an opportunity to share my ideas on distance education with others who have a similar interest.

      [ . . ] Yes, this is me!

[ . . ] No, this isn't me - I'm primarily interested in getting the information - not discussing the information with others.

Item 7 - I would like to understand the important differences between face-to-face instruction and teaching at a distance; and when to use each.

      [ . . ] Yes, this is me!

[ . . ] No, this isn't me - I'm not really interested in better understanding face-to-face instruction - I would prefer focusing entirely on distance education.

Item 8 - I'm really more interested in the area of learner/learning than I am with the technology of distance education.

      [ . . ] Yes, this is me!

[ . . ] No, this isn't me - I'm really most interested in the technology of distance education.

Item 9 - I would like to be able to put to use key terms such as andragogy, asynchronous, bandwidth, interactive learning, and immediate feedback.

      [ . . ] Yes, this is me!

[ . . ] No, this isn't me - I'm not really interested in learning about the key terms of distance education.

Item 10 - It's important to know the key elements or concepts that affect the design of a distance education program.

      [ . . ] Yes, this is me!

[ . . ] No, this isn't me - I'm not really interested in this aspect of the workshop.

Item 11 - It would be interesting to read about and discuss examples of distance education programs that are being used.

      [ . . ] Yes, this is me!

[ . . ] No, this isn't me - I would be more interested in designing my own program than reading about the programs of others.

Item 12 - I would like to better understand the process of evaluation that can be used in distance education.

      [ . . ] Yes, this is me!

[ . . ] No, this isn't me - I'm more interested in implementing distance education than I am in evaluating distance education.

Item 13 - I would like an opportunity to get feedback on a distance education program I am thinking about designing.

      [ . . ] Yes, this is me!

[ . . ] No, this isn't me - I really have no specific idea about my own distance education program right now.

If you answered at least 5 (of the 8) items with "This is me," the content and process of the Online Workshop appear to be what you are looking for. Now, just one last thing to check. Some people, in addition to the content and process, are most concerned about the technology of distance education - understanding it, selecting it, and designing how to use it. This will NOT be the focus of the Online Workshop! Pre-Assessment - Part 3 has a few items to clarify this concern.

If you answered 4 or more of these 8 items with "This isn't me," you should NOT consider enrolling in the Online Workshop. You may be more interested in the technology of distance education - understanding it, selecting it, and designing how to use it. This will NOT be the focus of the Online Workshop! Pre-Assessment - Part 3 has a few items to clarify this concern.
